The FFG Act protects individual species of flora and fauna as well as entire vegetation communities from destruction and disturbance on public land. The Northern Plains Grassland vegetation community as well as many species found within the grasslands are listed under this piece of legislation.

EPBC Act

The Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts (DEWHA) administers the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (the EPBC Act). The EPBC Act is the Federal Governments central piece of environmental legislation. Many species of flora and fauna that are found on the Northern Plains are listed under the EPBC Act. The Northern Plains Grassland vegetation community has also recently been nominated for listing under the EPBC Act.
